This was such a captivating webinar, Sarah, thank you! I'm amazed by how our breathing works in relation to the voice... I feel that I really get it. Your drawings are also stuck in my head, which provides peace of mind.

Your clear way of explaining this gives me confidence in my breath, which is really very special...

Thanks to this webinar, I feel more relaxed about singing now.  I understand the concept of undoing rather than doing. It was really great to have some exercises to achieve that!

As probably the least experienced of all the people in attendance, with the most to learn, I found it most interesting and quite extraordinary how the exercises you gave us seemed to increase the ability to extend the breath and facilitate better phrasing. I will definitely practice these techniques.

Your breath is the ultimate illustration of the mind-body connection. Learn to breathe freely at all times and use that energy functionally while singing. Support, quoi?!

When we talk about breathing techniques, the most important starting point is the realisation that it’s more about undoing than doing. Your body is designed to breathe functionally and your job is to facilitate that.

Every body is different, and the state of your body changes every day, even throughout the day. When you learn how to breathe functionally, you actually learn to tune in into the current state of your mind and body, and undo the tensions and / or inhibitions that prevent you from breathing with ease.

You sing on the exhalation. While doing so, you can change the outflow of air. But how much pressure do you need for this particular sound? And how fast should the air flow? Adapting the way you exhale, related to the sound you want to produce, is often called support. However, I prefer to call it Breath Management, as it describes perfectly what you’re doing, without adding the suggestion that you should work hard. Because – and this might surprise you – quite often, it turns out that you have to work differently, but less in order to reach your vocal goal.

This is what we’ll work with in this 1h 15 min webinar:

  • “Normal” respiration: Sense and nonsense on how you, a human being, take in oxygen.
  • Should you breathe with your belly / diaphragm / chest / shoulders / left ear? 🤯
  • How you can help your body to do what it’s designed to do.
  • How the way you exhale relates to your desired sound and how to optimise it.

The live webinar took 1,5 hours. This recording is edited and takes 1 hour 15 minutes. However, it’s important that you reserve at least 1,5 hours to watch the webinar, so you have the time to execute the exercises.
