Dr. Dann Mitton is a Canadian bass singer, teacher, and researcher with three decades of professional experience. He maintains an online boutique studio focused exclusively on basses and bass-baritones, whether cis or trans, where he guides singers from foundational exploration to professional repertoire. His teaching emphasizes emotional connection as the driver of technical growth, fostering voices that are free, flexible, and authentic.
Mitton earned four degrees in voice, culminating in a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance (Voice) with a specialization in voice pedagogy from the University of Toronto, where he trained extensively in classical and CCM styles. His doctoral research examined Russian lyric diction and low male voice development through applied vocal acoustics. His scholarship bridges performance and pedagogy, with publications and presentations on mature voices, historical pedagogy, and harm reduction for singers.
As a performer, Mitton has sung roles including Angelotti, Bartolo, Basilio, Sarastro, and Zaccaria, and has appeared as a soloist in Verdi’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah. He has trained at the Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Opera Theater Center, Britten-Pears Young Artists Programme, Jane Eaglen’s Wagner Intensive, Highlands Opera Studio, and the American Wagner Project.
Alongside teaching and performing, Mitton edits and advises voice research such as Ian Howell’s 2025 book Hearing Singing (Rowman & Littlefield). He serves on the editorial board of Voice and Speech Review and co-moderates two international voice forums, where he fosters constructive dialogue among teachers, coaches, SLPs, and laryngologists.
Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, he now makes his home in Toronto with his husband and their two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Rory and Anson.
